Bedford Issues Voluntary Water Conservation Message

Post Date:06/01/2026 9:33 AM

The Western Virginia Water Authority (Authority) jointly owns and operates the Smith Mountain Lake Water Treatment Plant with  Bedford Water.  This facility, which opened in May 2017, has established a successful working relationship between our utilities to provide treated drinking water from Smith Mountain Lake to customers in Bedford County and Franklin County.

Dry conditions have continued, and Smith Mountain Lake water levels have fallen below 791.5 feet. As a result, Bedford Water is asking its customers to voluntarily conserve water.  As Western Virginia Water Authority customers in the Westlake Area are served by the Smith Mountain Lake Water Treatment Plant, we are asking our customers in that area to support this effort.  To see the Bedford Water Drought Response and Water Conservation Plan or to learn water-wise tips, please visit brwa.com.

The Western Virginia Water Authority has a Drought Contingency Plan based on the water levels in Carvins Cove Reservoir at www.westernvawater.org/drought.  Based on that established plan, the Western Virginia Water Authority service area is not under Voluntary Water Conservation at this time.  However, we always encourage all our customers to use water wisely.  Tips on how to use water wisely are available at www.westernvawater.org/waterwise
