This means that customers who were impacted by this notice can safely drink and use their water after flushing their internal plumbing lines.

A series of bacteriological samples were collected and sent to a state certified lab. All samples collected on March 2, 2026, and March 3, 2026, were absent from both total coliform and E. coli bacteria in the area where the Boil Water Advisory is currently being lifted.

The Western Virginia Water Authority has flushed all public water lines.  Customers should flush their internal plumbing lines by opening a cold water faucet (such as a bathtub faucet) at the highest elevation in your home and running it for a few minutes until the water runs clear and the temperature changes.  Water sitting in pipes in your home tends to be warmer.  After you have run your faucet for a few minutes, you will notice that the water temperature feels cooler as fresh water from public distribution pipes buried in the ground enters your pipes.  It is also recommended to throw out ice from ice makers and make new ice.

This notice is being sent to you by Western Virginia Water Authority.

The Virginia Department of Health – Office of Drinking Water (Lexington Field Office) and Western Virginia Water Authority are advising residents of the addresses listed above to to boil their drinking water or use bottled water until further notice.

This precaution is necessary because of the occurrences of zero and/or negative system pressure at the waterworks due to a water line break observed on Sunday, March 1, 2026.

The addresses listed above are impacted by the water break and are advised to use boiled tap water or bottled water for drinking and cooking purposes as a safety precaution.  You can safely use the water for showering/bathing, cleaning, washing.

Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, beverage and food preparation, and making ice until further notice. Boiling is the preferred method to assure that the tap water is safe to drink. Bring all tap water to a rolling boil, let it boil for one minute, and let it cool before using, or use bottled water.

We will inform you when you no longer need to boil your water.

To address this problem, the broken water line will be repaired, the water in the system will be disinfected, and the system will be re-filled with water to restore normal pressure. Western Virginia Water Authority staff will collect a sample of the water for bacteriological testing today. It takes 24-hours for those tests to incubate before analysis. Even if the first test is negative for any type of bacteria, a second test is required to be taken and must be negative for any type of bacteria before the boil water notice can be lifted. Please note that this entire process takes at least 48-hours.  You will be notified on this webpage and a hand-delivered notice will be delivered to your home.

A copy of the boil water notice is being hand delivered to residences and businesses in the impacted area.
