Coagulation

Coagulation is composed of two parts, the actual coagulation and the preceeding flocculation. In flocculation, alum, polymers and other chemicals are added to coagulate any tiny particles that remain suspended in the wastewater. By this step of the treatment process, only very small particles remain and because they are so small they would be very difficult to remove without coagulation. The chemicals mixed in during flocculation make these particles bind together in masses called floc. The floc is large enough to settle to the bottom of coagulation tanks or be caught in the filters of the next process.
