Nitrification

Nitrification involves the use of dissovled air being forced into the water, just as in aeration. In nitrification, however, nitrifying bacteria are employed to convert ammonia to nitrate. Some nitrogen leaves the tanks as a gas; the remaining nitrates are filtered out in subsequent steps of the treatment process.
