Water Authority Hosts Environmental Education Program for Area Girl Scouts
Over 115 area Brownies, Juniors and Cadet Girl Scouts participated in an Environmental Education workshop sponsored by the Western Virginia Water Authority at Carvins Cove Reservoir and Carvins Cove Filtration Plant. By participating in one of five sessions over a three-week period from September 23rd through October 12th, each girl earned the Water Drop patch and the Get with the Land patch.
Sarah Baumgardner, Environmental Communications Coordinator for the Western Virginia Water Authority and Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) employees Mary Dail, Alicia Meadows, Susan Edwards, Jenny Poland-Knepper and Pamela Derk presented hands-on activities including a watershed model, a groundwater model, and assisted the girls with water quality testing as part of World Water Monitoring Day. The Girl Scouts also picked-up litter, went on a nature hike and toured the Carvins Cove Water Filtration Plant to earn the badges. Litter clean-up supplies and giveaway materials for each participant were provided by Clean Valley Council, DEQ and the Western Virginia Water Authority.
Additional Environmental Education programs will be offered this Spring. For more information, please contact Sarah Baumgardner, Environmental Communications Coordinator for the Western Virginia Water Authority at 853-5707.
