Water Authority Officers Elected
At its June 23 meeting, the Western Virginia Board of Directors elected new officers for the 2005–2006 fiscal year. Serving as chair is City Councilman Dr. M. Rupert Cutler; serving as vice-chair is Roanoke County Supervisor and former Authority Chair Mr. Michael W. Altizer. Serving as treasurer is Authority Director of Finance and Administrative Services Mr. Bruce Grant and serving as secretary is Authority Executive Assistant Ms. Jean Thurman.
During its June meeting, the Board of Directors also approved the 2005–2006 fiscal year budget, a summary of which is available on the Water Authority’s Web site (www.westernvawater.org). Board of Directors’ meetings are monthly and open to the public. The meeting schedule is posted on the Water Authority’s Web site, and the meetings are held in the second-floor board room at the Water Authority headquarters at 601 S. Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke.
July 1, 2005, is the one-year anniversary of the Water Authority, formed by merging the water and wastewater operations of the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County. A customer appreciation day, organized in recognition of the Water Authority’s one-year anniversary, will be held Thursday, June 30, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the first-floor customer service area of the Water Authority’s headquarters at 601 S. Jefferson Street in downtown Roanoke. Refreshments will be served.
The Water Authority treats and delivers 23 million gallons of drinking water per day for 55,000 customer accounts (155,000 residents in the Roanoke Valley). For its 46,000 sewer customers (more than 185,000 residents), the Water Authority treats 37 million gallons of wastewater a day from throughout the Valley at its Roanoke Regional Water Pollution Control Plant. The Water Authority maintains 960 miles of water mains, 900 miles of sewer mains and 4,000 fire hydrants in the City of Roanoke and Roanoke County.
