Proper Disposal of Medications

Most unused prescription drugs should not be thrown away in their original containers nor should they be flushed down sink or toilet drains. In an effort to keep trace amounts of pharmaceuticals out of our waterways and to combat the growing abuse of prescription drugs, the Federal Government has issued new guidelines for the proper disposal of prescription drugs.

Federal guidelines recommend returning any unused medication to a local pharmacy or mixing crushed solid and/or liquid medications with an undesirable substance such as kitty litter or coffee grounds in a sealed plastic bag prior to putting the substance in the trash.

More information about the proper disposal of prescription drugs is available from your local pharmacist, online from the Federal Government or through this link.
