Educational Offerings

Protecting our natural resources through education and conservation is integral to the Western Virginia Water Authority's vision. Therefore, the Authority offers free outreach presentations and tours of its facilities to school, civic, neighborhood and other groups.

Free, SOL-correlated classroom presentations on a wide range of topics, including water supply, watersheds, water conservation, properties of water and recycling and waste reduction are available for grades Kindergarten through 12 in any school in the City of Roanoke or Roanoke County. Presentations and tours are also available for area college students.

In addition, special events are organized throughout the year to highlight the importance of our water resources, such as during National Drinking Water Week and for World Water Monitoring Day. The Authority also hosts an annual environmental workshop for area Girl Scouts at Carvins Cove.

In its first year of existence, the Water Authority established the Western Virginia Water Authority award program for the Western Virginia Regional Science Fair. This yearly award program recognizes outstanding science fair projects that pertain to water quality, water conservation, water treatment or water distribution. First, second and third place awards, in the form of $100, $75 and $50 checks, are offered each year.
